Top New Year's travel destinations

With the arrival of fall, it’s that time of year when many GOT fans would say “Winter is coming.” Those words, in fact, are very true for the travelers of the world also. With winter fast approaching that means one thing—Holiday season. And what better way to prepare for the holidays than by starting to get those New Year’s travel plans ready.

Top New Year’s Travel Destinations

I’ll skip the usual suspects that seem to populate every New Year’s travel destination list. You know, places like New York, Hong Kong, Dubai, Paris, London, Sydney, and so. Instead, I’ll try to give some fresh new alternate destinations to give you something more to think about.

Cape Town

Top New Year travel destinations #1.

My top choice for New Year’s travel destinations:Cape Town’s beautiful Table Mountain

It’s no secret that I love South Africa. While we normally equate Christmas and New Year’s with winter in the northern hemisphere. Cape Town is a city where you can ring in the new year in the heart of summer. Good vibes, good parties, and both beach and mountain—you can’t go wrong!

Bhutan

I know what you’re thinking. Bhu-what?!? Yes, you read that correctly, Bhutan. If you’re looking for an off the beaten track destination that has low tourist numbers but will still provide a memorable experience, then Bhutan is a great place to ring in the new year. With more International travelers visiting each year, this place won’t stay under the radar for long. Bogota, Colombia

Colombia is a country that has quickly gone from one of the most dangerous places on the planet to one of the most desirable. While it doesn’t possess the attraction of nearby Brazil, Colombia is somewhere tourism numbers aren’t crazy, but you can still enjoy an action-packed New Year amongst a diverse crowd of individuals. In fact, Bogota is a haven for both food and art as well. So you can combine the thrill of ringing in the New Year with culture and delicious food.

Prague, Czech Republic

“What would you like to drink with your meal?

“I’ll have a water, no ice.”

“Really..water.” the waiter responded in confusion.

“But here, the beer is cheaper than water.” He continued.

“Well then I’ll have a beer!”

This was one of the first conversations I had in Prague. Beer cheaper than water, beautiful city and a great nightlifeneed I say more?

Athens

What better New Year's travel destination than standing Atop the Acropolis like a king!

Standing Atop the Acropolis like a king!

Disclaimer. I lost my phone and wallet on New Year’s Eve in Athens in 2017.

While some would question, how does that equate to a great time? I personally consider it validation that it must be a rocking New Year’s Eve travel destination because I enjoyed it so much in spite of what happened and didn’t let that bit of bad luck take away from my experience. Additionally, Athens is very affordable and, in case you’re wondering what it’s like to visit Athens in winter, check here for more info.

Now that my list is done, let me know your top New Year’s travel destinations in the comments below and explain why!

  1. I’ve always spent the holidays with family, travel very little, but this year I want to get out of here. I appreciate the list never thought to go to any of these places.

My now-husband and I had so much fun around New Years before we had our son – then travel for 3 became so expensive.
    Great reminder though.

Ah, you have such a wonderful list here and a great attitude for travel.I would go to any of your recommendations. Prior to my 8 yr being born, I travelled so much for work that I just wanted to be home (at that time in Miami)on NYE.
