A New Era Of Accommodation: The Luxury Hostel

Riddle me this.

Riddle me that.

What do you get when you combine a hostel with a boutique hotel?

The answer is simple: The Luxury Hostel! More specifically, Fauna Luxury Hostel in Costa Rica.

Fauna Luxury Hostel

This newly opened hostel in the Escazú area of San Jose, Costa Rica combines all the classic elements of a traditional hostel: tours, free breakfast, a large communal area, pool, etc., while also including beautifully customized rooms for individuals that seek the atmosphere of the hostel experience, but the serenity and luxury of a private room.

The Rooms

The hostel rooms are not equipped with your typical “bunk bed” arrangement. Instead, they feature a pod-style; similar to Japanese capsule hotels. What sets the Fauna Luxury Hostel apart; however, is that it uses full, single-sized beds and provides a space that is large enough to sit up completely…even for a big guy like me.

The single rooms, on the other hand, feature walls that have been hand-painted by local artists. With each room offering a different element, guests are awarded not only the peace of a pleasant rest, but also a taste of Costa Rican art culture.

The Vision

Upon speaking with the hostel owner, Marcelo Silva, it is easy to see that his vision is much larger than the hostel itself. He seeks to provide a platform for local artists to display their talents to individuals from all over the world. Ultimately, the end goal is to create not only a place of rest, but also a living, walk-through art museum.

The major highlight of the hostel; however, in my opinion, is its rooftop. Standing atop the Fauna Luxury Hostel roof, on a clear day, you overlook the entire city of San Jose and the surrounding mountains. It’s the perfect space to unwind and chill after a long day of touring, or to simply relax and enjoy the sun.

The Final Verdict

Although the distance from the airport isn’t very far, it’s worth pointing out that with local traffic the trip can take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. Even still, that only equates to about a $10-15 (USD) ride with Uber. With that said, overall the Fauna Luxury Hostel is still a work in progress…but I anticipate that the finished product will be no less than spectacular.

Key Information about the Fauna Luxury Hostel:

  • While there is a grocery store and a handful of restaurants nearby, the distance to downtown San Jose is about a 20-minute drive (about $5-6 in Uber).
  • The average cost of a pod bed in a shared room: $16/night
  • The average cost of a single room starts at $44/night
  • Hostelworld Ranking: 9.6/10
  • Tripadvisor: 5/5 stars and #1 for specialty lodging in Escazú
